What a browser wallet extension actually does

A wallet is not a bank account and it is not a website. It is a key holder that speaks to blockchains — and, in extension form, it speaks to the applications open in your browser too.

    Create a new wallet or restore an existing one

    A fresh recovery phrase is safest for a new user. Restoring is only for a wallet you already hold — and the phrase is typed into the extension, never into a website.

    Write the phrase down, then set a spending password

    Offline, in order, on two copies kept apart. The spending password unlocks the extension on this device; the phrase is what recovers the wallet everywhere.

    Connect a dApp and read the prompt

    The connection request lists what the site is asking for. Grant the minimum, and treat any request for your recovery phrase as the end of the conversation.

    Review the transaction, then sign

    Confirm the network, the recipient, the amount and the fee. A signature is irreversible, so the preview screen is the last line of defence you have.
